As fans of cheerleading around the world are aware, season 2 of the Netflix series “Cheer” debuted this week. While the show highlights the many exciting and positive aspects of our larger cheer community, please be aware that the series contains mature content.

That’s especially true for episode 5, which addresses the critically important topic of sexual abuse. We appreciate that the series covered this important issue and recommend anyone underage watching it does so with a trusted adult. Unfortunately, there are also scenes in the series that include appearances by individuals who are currently on USA Cheer’s list of ineligible participants. We have notified Netflix of this presumed oversight and our thoughts are with any individual who may have been re-traumatized.

USA Cheer is committed to creating a safe and positive environment for its participant’s physical, emotional, and social development and promoting an environment free from abuse and misconduct. If you or anyone you know is experiencing sexual misconduct or abuse of any kind, report it immediately to the authorities and/or a trusted adult. Please visit usacheer.org/safesport for more information on our free athlete protection training and reporting options.

Sincerely,
Lauri Harris
Executive Director
